Verna's Table-Saving Folding Fairy Trivet
Made in an old Pennsylvania tobacco shed since 1986
Verna Landis, 72, has made folding wooden trivets in Lititz, Lancaster County, for 39 years — ever since a hot pan left a ring in her mother’s table. Arthritis in both thumbs has ended the work. These are her last 214.
“The dinner table is the last place in the house where everybody still faces each other. Nobody should have to ruin it with a hot pan — and nobody should have to slide a dish towel under the turkey.”
Verna Landis · Lititz, Pennsylvania

What makes Verna’s trivet different
All petals turn on one pin. Two fingers, two seconds, and the figure opens into a flower — and folds back just as fast.
Heat spreads over many petals instead of one spot, and the small gaps let it escape. Room for a Dutch oven or a turkey platter.
Every petal is stained and sealed on its own. Gravy and sauce wipe off with a damp cloth.
No more trivets lost in a drawer. Folded up, it stands on the counter or mantel, ready when the timer rings.
The Star Tree is Verna’s original from 1986. The Fairy holds that same star — made for her granddaughter in 2011.
Most people put it on a shelf as decoration. Then Thanksgiving comes, and it ends up under the turkey.
“Those white rings on old tables are almost always heat and steam trapped in the finish. Once they’re in, they’re very hard to get out without refinishing the whole top. The best protection is simple: keep hot cookware off bare wood and let air move underneath. A wide trivet with open gaps does exactly that. I’d rather people use one every single Sunday than call me afterwards.”

Why Verna’s trivet lasts
- Thick wood petals. Made to carry a full Dutch oven, not just a teapot.
- One sturdy pin. Opens and closes smoothly, year after year.
- Sealed surface. Wipes clean, no sauce stains soaking in.
- Heavy round base. Stands steady on the counter when folded.
- Made to be used. Verna’s own trivet has been under the Sunday pot pie since 1986.
If it doesn’t earn its place on your table, one email to info@craft-folk.com is enough. Verna would rather have it back than have it sit in a cupboard.
Tip from Verna: Open the petals all the way before you set down a hot pan, so the weight sits on the whole flower. Wipe with a damp cloth, never soak it in water. Every petal is colored by hand, so the shades can differ slightly from piece to piece — no two are exactly alike.

A note from the workshop:
Verna Landis has made folding wooden trivets in an old tobacco shed in Lititz, Pennsylvania, since 1986. It started the Sunday a hot pan left a white ring in her mother’s cherry dining table — that same evening she cut the first little tree that opens into a flower. In 2011 she made the fairy for her granddaughter, holding the tree’s star in her hands. Since then, about 1,400 have gone to family tables. Arthritis in both thumbs no longer lets her drill the center pin that makes every petal turn. 214 are left, Fairies and Star Trees together. When they are gone, there will be no more.

What families say about Verna’s trivets
I bought the fairy because she was pretty. At Thanksgiving my sister set the roasting pan right on her, and everybody wanted to know where I got her.

The Star Tree stands right next to my stove. First trivet in 30 years that I never have to go looking for.

Brenda K., Frederick, MD
Gave the fairy to my granddaughter for her first apartment. She keeps it on her counter and sends me a picture every time she cooks.

Dottie R., Wilmington, DE
The petals open so smoothly. I put my big Dutch oven straight from the oven on it, and the table underneath was only a little warm.

Marlys T., Lancaster, PA
I ordered the Star Tree for Christmas and then went back for the fairy. The tree is on the mantel now and the fairy lives next to my stove.

Arrived very well packed, with a little card. My husband calls her the prettiest thing in our kitchen. She also works harder than anything else in it.

She stands on the windowsill all week. Saturday mornings she opens up for the teapot.

How is it made?
How is it made?
Every petal is cut, sanded, stained and sealed on its own in Verna’s workshop. Then all of them are drilled and set on one center pin, so the Fairy or the Star Tree opens into a round flower for hot pots — and folds back into a figure for the counter or mantel. Small differences in color from piece to piece are part of it.
