Odette's Sure-Grip Hand-Carved Cane
Hand-carved by a lake in Muskoka, Ontario
Odette Thibodeau, seventy-one. Fifty-four years at the bench in the cane workshop her father opened in 1951, and more than eight thousand canes. 317 left, and the workshop closes for good.
“I’d made canes for half of Huntsville. And my own mother sat at home all winter because of a grey one. The owl went to Mass every Sunday for eleven winters. That’s what a cane is for.”
Odette Thibodeau · Huntsville, Ontario
What arrives at your door
Four things that make it different
The grip is shaped to the open palm first, the way her father did it in 1951. The animal is carved around it afterwards. The weight spreads across the whole hand, not two knuckles.
The handle sits at a slight angle, not flat across. The weight goes into the palm and forearm instead of the wrist.
The weight sits up near the grip. The cane swings forward on its own as you walk, so the hand does less work.
Rubbed with oil by hand, never varnished. Varnish gets slippery with a cold hand or a glove. Oiled wood gets a better grip, not a worse one.
Four grips, four different hands
Made for
What you are actually getting
- Solid hardwood. No hollow metal tube, nothing to rattle in the cold.
- Cut to your height, once. It ships long on purpose. A fine-toothed saw takes a few centimetres off in under a minute.
- Hand-carved detail. Every feather and every strand of mane cut by hand, not pressed or moulded.
- A finish you can feel through. Hand-rubbed oil, not sprayed varnish, so it doesn’t turn slippery with a cold hand or a glove.
- 317 in total. Across all four grips. The workshop is closing, so there is no restock.
Grip preference is personal. If the shape is wrong for the hand it was meant for, send it back within thirty days for a full refund — one email starts it, no explanation needed. A cane that stays in the closet helps nobody.
These are carved by hand from natural hardwood, so grain, tone and the depth of each cut vary from piece to piece. Two Owls are never identical. The cane also arrives longer than you need — that is deliberate, so it can be cut to your exact height.

The Last Winter
The Last Winter
A note from the workshop:
Odette Thibodeau has made canes in the workshop her father built on Lake Vernon, Huntsville, Ontario, since she was seventeen. In 1994 her own mother came home from the hospital with a grey aluminium cane and stayed inside all winter. Odette traced her hand on brown paper and carved her an owl, and Maman walked to Mass with it every Sunday for eleven winters. More than eight thousand canes later, Dupuytren’s has pulled her fingers in toward her palms, and she can no longer hold a carving knife safely. These 317 are the last canes from a workshop that has been open since 1951.

What people say about Odettes canes
Mom had two canes and used neither. She has carried the owl every Sunday since September, right up the church steps in the snow.

Linda M., Peterborough, ON
The horse comes apart at the brass ring and fits in the trunk next to my gloves. My old metal one rattled the whole way to my daughter’s.
Verified
Doug R., Red Deer, AB
With gloves on, my old cane slid every time the sidewalk was icy. The oiled grip on the elephant doesn’t. My wrist doesn’t ache after the walk to the store anymore.
Verified
Pierre L., Sudbury, ON
My husband walks the dog along the river every morning and refused anything that looked medical. He has given the leopard a name. That tells you how it went.
Verified
Carol B., Kamloops, BC
It came in brown paper with the length written on the end in pencil. My granddaughter cut it to my height in five minutes.
Verified
Ken T., Brandon, MB
It leans by my rocking chair on the porch now, not in the closet. Getting up out of that low chair is so much easier with the trunk to hold.
Verified
Monique G., Moncton, NB
I walk down to the lake every morning again, even in January. Three people at the lookout have asked me where it’s from.

How is it made?
How is it made?
Odette starts with the hand, not the wood. She traces the hand on brown paper and shapes the grip to the open palm, at a slight angle to the shaft. Only then does she carve the owl, horse, elephant or leopard into it, cut by cut. The finish is oil, rubbed in by hand, so the grip stays sure with a cold hand or a glove. Each cane is wrapped in brown paper with its length pencilled on the end.
