Nev's Handmade Flying Ace Wind Spinner
Built in a tin shed in Rosewood, Queensland
Nev Barclay, seventy-four. Thirty-four years as an RAAF engine fitter at Amberley, and close to four thousand wind spinners since 1987. 64 left, and the shed is cleared before Christmas.
“Half five in the morning, before the kookaburras start, you spin a prop and you hear if it’s right. I want these out in the wind. In real backyards. Where a kid looks up and asks what that plane is.”
Nev Barclay · Rosewood, Queensland
What arrives at your door
Four things that make it different
Every propeller is balanced until it spins true. It turns in a light breeze of around six kilometres an hour and hums instead of rattling.
Real wood with a brass hub, not plastic. It weathers like an old garden bench instead of fading and cracking in one summer.
Red, white and blue, the roundel the RAAF flew under before 1956. Olive-green body, bright red nose, a goggled pilot in a red scarf.
Push it into a lawn, a garden bed or a big pot. No drilling, no tools, nothing to fix to the fence.
“A propeller that’s out of balance tells you straight away. It shakes, it squeaks and it wears itself out. Nev’s props are balanced the way we balance a real one. That’s why they spin quietly when the cheap ones rattle.”
Graham Tully · retired aircraft engineer, twenty years restoring vintage aircraft as a volunteer in Queensland
Made for
What you are actually getting
- A real wooden propeller. Not plastic, so it doesn’t go brittle in the Queensland sun.
- A balanced spin. Turns in a light breeze and stays quiet in a stiff one.
- The old RAAF colours. Painted roundels from the Tiger Moth years, on an olive-green plane.
- Set up in two minutes. Push the stake in and you’re done.
- 64 in total. The shed is being cleared, so there is no restock.
Push it into the garden and watch it turn for up to thirty days. If it isn’t what you expected, send one email and you’ll get a full refund, no questions asked.
The roundels and details are painted by hand and the propeller is natural timber, so the grain and the paint vary slightly from piece to piece. Like any painted garden piece, the colours soften over the years in full sun.

Before Christmas, The Shed Is Cleared
A note from the shed:
Nev Barclay spent thirty-four years as an RAAF engine fitter at Amberley. Since 1987 he has built wind spinners in his tin shed in Rosewood, Queensland — close to four thousand of them, each one modelled on the Tiger Moth his father flew in the war. Arthritis in both hands means he can no longer paint the roundels or balance the propellers. The block is sold and the shed has to be empty before Christmas. These 64 are the last ones. When they are gone, there are no more.

What people say about Nev’s wind spinners
It stands by the front stairs of our old Queenslander. Every afternoon when the breeze comes up the hill, the prop starts turning and the neighbours’ kids wave at it.

Next to the water tank on the farm, where I can see it from the kitchen. Two big storms so far and it’s still spinning true.

Graham T., Dalby QLD
I’m in a unit now, so it lives in the big herb pot on the balcony. The breeze off the river keeps it turning most of the day.

Anne W., Brisbane QLD
It stands at the end of the vegie patch. Our grandson calls it Pop’s plane and checks on it every time he visits.

Ross H., Wagga Wagga NSW
It came packed by hand with the initials on the wing, just like the article said. My husband spun the prop on the kitchen table and listened. He was impressed.

Lorraine G., Bendigo VIC
I put it beside the bird bath, where my husband’s chair used to be. The lorikeets don’t mind it at all. When the breeze picks up, I go out and watch it.

Patricia L., Hervey Bay QLD
Right on the coast, so it gets a sea breeze every day. Took two minutes to put in the garden. I ordered a second one for my brother.

How is it made?
Nev paints every biplane in the colours of his father’s Tiger Moth: olive green, a red nose and the red, white and blue roundel the RAAF flew under before 1956. The propeller is real timber with a brass hub. He balances each one by hand until it spins true, the way he balanced engine parts for thirty-four years at Amberley. Before it goes in the box, he writes his initials on the wing. No two are identical.
