Hand-Tuned in Buxton, North Carolina

Eleanor β€œNell” Pearce, 67 β€” retired Sea Turtle Patrol Coordinator, Cape Hatteras National Seashore (1987–2021). Her last hand-tuned bronze chimes β€” choose your animal form, every chime tuned against the surf at Cape Point.

β€œ

A chime that doesn’t sing is just bronze. I made these to sing.

β€” Nell Pearce, Buxton, NC

What Makes It Different
🎡
The Bronze Sustain

Four hand-cut bronze tubes with the long, warm sustain Nell spent six years refining. Bronze rings differently from aluminum β€” each strike carries the surf, not a chime-store jingle, and keeps ringing for almost a full minute.

🌊
The Resonance Dome

The ornamental bronze cap isn’t decoration. It’s an acoustic reflector that funnels sound from the four tubes downward and outward instead of letting it scatter. Forty-seven dome reliefs were tested before this one was kept.

🌊
The Salt-Cured Bronze

Antique-patina bronze is naturally salt-air resistant. Six years on the Outer Banks have proven it. No rust, no corrosion, no outdoor decay β€” built for porches that see weather, not cabinets that see dust.

🎯
The Cape Point Tuning

Every chime tuned by ear against a single bronze fragment Nell keeps in her apron pocket, calibrated to the frequency of the surf at Cape Point at dawn β€” between E and F. Sea turtle, barred owl, hummingbird, dolphin β€” every animal form leaves the workshop in tune with the same fragment.

🎁
The Animal-Form Tribute

One animal on top, smaller pendants below. Each form started with somebody who wanted a specific sound for a specific porch β€” an owl for a grandmother, a hummingbird for a kitchen window, a dolphin for a ferry captain, a sea turtle for a thirty-four-summer patrol officer. The form is the tribute. The sound is the chime.

✏️
The Handwritten Note

Every chime ships with a handwritten note from Nell on the back of a Cape Hatteras Lighthouse postcard. Her initials β€” E. P. β€” stamped into a small brass tag wired to the hanging ring.

β˜… Expert Perspective

In thirty years of cataloging coastal folk crafts, I’ve handled exactly four chime makers who tune by ear against a physical reference. Nell is the only one of them who hand-cuts her own bronze tubes. What she calls β€œlistening to the thumb” is, in the trade, the difference between a manufactured chime and an instrument. You can hear the difference inside the first three seconds β€” sea turtle, owl, hummingbird, doesn’t matter which form. Same hand, same fragment, same family of sound.

The Quality Promise
  • Hand-tuned, every one. No batch tuning, no software, no shortcuts. Each chime passes through the bronze fragment in Nell’s apron pocket before it ships β€” regardless of which animal form you choose.
  • Cast bronze, not stamped tin. Solid weight, antique patina finish, salt-air resistant for outdoor use year-round.
  • Long-sustain copper-bronze tubes. Each strike rings for nearly a full minute β€” the sustain a coastal porch was built for.
  • Brass β€œE. P.” signature tag. Stamped by hand, wired to the hanging ring. Every chime carries Nell’s mark.
  • Hand-packed, hand-noted. Each order arrives with a postcard note from Nell on a Cape Hatteras Lighthouse card.

30-Day Listening Guarantee

Hang it on your porch. Let the wind find it. If after thirty days the sound isn’t carrying the way Nell promised, send it back. Full refund, no questions, return shipping covered.

⚠️ A Note on Handcraft

Because every chime is hand-cut, hand-tuned, and hand-finished, no two are perfectly identical. Small variations in patina, file marks on the tubes, and slight asymmetries in the animal pendants are part of the work β€” not flaws, but evidence of the hand. The tuning, however, is exact. Every chime sits between E and F against the bronze fragment.

What Our Customers Say

  • Sounds nothing like a garden-store chime

The bronze sustain is unbelievable — long, warm, present. The handwritten postcard from Nell about the morning she tuned mine almost made me cry.

    Joanna R., Asheville NC

  • The most meaningful gift I've given

Bought this for my mother. She has it on her porch facing the marsh and tells me she hears her sister in it. Genuinely the most meaningful gift I have ever given.

  • Six months on a Carolina porch, zero rust

Salt air and humidity, no rust. The bronze just deepens. Every breeze rings it. Exactly what was promised.

How is each chime actually made?

Every chime is cast bronze with an antique patina finish, then assembled and hand-tuned by Nell herself in a 16×20 ft converted garage workshop behind her cottage in Buxton, NC — two blocks from the dune line at Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Each of the four bronze tubes is hand-cut, filed at a half-degree slope, and tuned by ear — one chime at a time, no batch tuning, no machines. Nell's final check is against a single bronze fragment she keeps in the front pocket of her work apron. It snapped off a tube on an August morning in 2019, the day of the highest Loggerhead dawn nest count she ever had at Cape Point. It rings between E and F — the frequency of the surf at Cape Point at dawn in late August. Every chime gets that check before it ships.

This is the final batch. After these, the tuning hammer goes down.
