Final Collection · 476 Baskets

Hand-Quilted in the Yorkshire Dales

Maureen Ackroyd, 71. Her grandmother taught her to quilt as a girl, and for fifty years she has worked at her mother’s 1969 Singer. For thirty of those years she made flower baskets for friends and family and never sold a single one. This is her final collection. A property company bought the corner where her workshop stands, and it closes at the end of November.

“

A woman at the county show asked if I could make something for her utility room. She told me her laundry basket was the ugliest thing in her house. I made her one, and when she came to collect it she stood in the doorway and said she didn’t think she wanted to put washing in it. Far too pretty to shove in a corner. That was the first basket. I never sold one. I gave them to people I knew. These are the last.

✿

Why This Basket

Six Things You Won’t Find on a Printed Basket

Every detail below comes out of fifty years of making things properly and refusing to cut corners on any of it.

01Construction

Three Layers, Quilted All the Way Round

A heavy cotton-poly face, a firm wadded core and Maureen’s feather-stitch quilting locking the three layers together, right the way round the outside, not just on the panel you happen to be looking at. That is where the weight comes from. You notice it the moment you lift one.

02The Flowers

Appliquéd, Not Printed

Every petal, leaf and stem is a piece of cloth cut, layered and stitched onto the quilted ground. The motifs sit slightly raised, so you can run a finger over a poppy or a daisy and feel where it begins and ends. A print is a picture of a flower. This is a flower made of cloth.

03Structure

Stands Up Straight, Empty or Full

No wire ring, no plastic frame. The wadded, quilted walls hold the shape themselves, so it sits up straight in the corner whether it is heaped with washing or completely empty. No caving sides, no handles flopping shut.

04Handles

Bartacked at Every Stress Point

Doubled canvas handles, bartacked exactly where handles usually give way. Carry a full load of washing up and down the stairs without a seam pulling loose. Maureen has done every handle the same way for fifty years.

05Capacity

Roomy, 40 × 56 cm

Deep enough for a full load of washing, a pile of blankets, a stash of wool or a heap of toys. It holds its shape instead of slumping. The lining wipes clean, and the whole basket is machine washable on a cool, gentle cycle. Lay flat to dry.

06Longevity

Built to Last for Years

A friend of Maureen’s two streets away has had one in the same corner for eight years. It started out holding washing and now holds her knitting and her best quilts. That is not a throwaway. It is part of a house. Yours is made exactly the same way.

✿ Craft Note

“The difference between a properly quilted basket and a printed one is obvious the second you pick it up. A true quilted piece has loft. You can feel the wadding under the surface, and the stitching lifts the pattern into a raised relief that gives the cloth real body and weight. What Maureen makes is the real thing: a three-layer quilted build with hand-placed appliqué, the way quilters in the Dales have worked for generations. A piece made like this holds its shape and lasts for decades.”

✿ A Note From the Workshop

Maureen finishes every basket by hand and looks each one over before it is dispatched. Small differences in the quilting and in where the flowers sit are part of handmade work. No two baskets are exactly alike, and that is the point. The appliqué is placed by hand, the feather-stitch is guided by hand, and the handles are bartacked one at a time. These are not faults. They are the maker’s hand, fifty years of it. Her granddaughter Evie packs every order.

The Final Sale

Message from the Artist:

After years of making things by hand, our workshop is closing. These are the last pieces we'll ever ship. Every item on this page was made slowly, carefully, and with more love than any factory could replicate. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced. Just real craft from real hands.

We're proud of every single one. We hope they find good homes.

When they're gone, they're gone — and so are we.

Customer selfie in her hallway with the Red Poppies basket

Bought the poppy one and it lives in the hall now for towels on their way upstairs. I was half expecting a printed picture on cheap fabric but the poppies are actually sewn on, you can feel the edges with your fingers. Proper weight to it as well. Very pleased.

Customer selfie in her bedroom with the Cottage Roses basket

The stripes and roses are exactly like the photos, maybe a touch softer in real life which I actually prefer. I fill it on the bed and carry it round the house and the sides don't cave in when it's half empty, which my last one did constantly. Lovely thing for the money.

Customer holding the Wild Botanicals basket full of wool

Mine is full of wool and half finished jumpers and I lug it from the chair to the kitchen and back most nights. The handles feel very strong and the stitching where they join hasn't moved at all. The black and white leaves look smart next to my old armchair. Glad I got one before they all go.

Summer Flowers basket in a utility room

Arrived well packed in a proper box, not just a bag. It sits next to the washer and takes a full load of wet washing. Had a bit of fabric conditioner spill on the inside and it wiped straight off. Brightest thing in my utility room by a mile.

Book Garden basket with wool next to an armchair

Didn't really need another laundry basket so I use the book one for my knitting. It's bigger than I thought, about knee height, and swallows a blanket and all my wool with room to spare. My husband thought the books were real at first glance. Lovely bit of work.

Daisy Field basket at the foot of a cottage bed

Took a few days longer to arrive than I'd hoped but it was worth the wait. At this price I assumed it would be flimsy. It isn't, the quilting is thick and it stands up on its own at the end of my bed even when it's empty. Keeps all the winter jumpers in one place instead of on the chair.
