Lynda's Handcrafted Copper Bird Bath
Hand-raised in an old boat shed in the Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island
Lynda Blakeney, seventy-two, thirty-one years a coppersmith in the Esquimalt navy dockyard. These are the last 83 bird baths she will ever make.
“Everybody on this island thinks water is the one thing we’ve got too much of. Then one night in December it all turns to glass, and that little bowl is the only drink for half a mile.”
— Lynda Blakeney, Cowichan Valley, BC“On the coast, people don’t think about water for birds in winter, because it rains so much. But in a cold snap, open water disappears overnight, and that is exactly when birds need it most. A shallow, clean bowl of water, kept open in the morning, is one of the simplest things a garden can offer.”
Dr Megan Rowley, Ph.D. Wildlife Biologist · Wild bird rehabilitation, Vancouver Island- Hand-raised, not pressed out by the thousand — the bowl and the rim are worked by hand, which is why the patina falls differently on every one.
- Designed by watching, not by drawing — twenty-eight winters of watching juncos and thrushes and changing the depth and the rim until the birds actually used it.
- Metal all the way through — no plastic to go brittle in the sun, no glaze to chip.
- Sized for small birds first — a junco or a hummingbird can stand at the edge without going out of its depth.
- The last of the run — Lynda is closing the shed. 83 left, the last one goes out before Christmas.

The Last Winter
The Last Winter
A note from the shed:
For thirty-one years Lynda Blakeney worked as a coppersmith at the navy dockyard in Esquimalt, bending and hammering copper pipe for warships. In the winter of 1997 she hammered a scrap of copper into a shallow bowl, and the next morning a varied thrush was drinking from it. Since then she has made bird baths in an old boat shed in the Cowichan Valley, about twenty-four hundred hammer blows each. Now the nerves in both wrists are worn out, and the surgeon said no more hammering. These 83 are the last bird baths from her shed. The last one goes out before Christmas.

What bird lovers say about Lyndas bird baths
We had that cold snap in January and every bit of water in the yard was frozen. I did the kettle trick Lynda talks about. Within ten minutes there were juncos lined up on the rim.

It came wrapped in brown paper with a little note on the date it was made. It went under the tree, and into the garden on Boxing Day.

My old concrete bird bath cracked in its second winter. This one I just pull out of the ground on a cold night and put it back in the morning. Takes a minute.

The robins splash half the water out every morning. I top it up with my coffee and they are back within minutes.

We have an Anna’s hummingbird that stays all winter. On frosty mornings she sits on the copper rim before anything else is awake.

The copper looks lovely against the snow. The water stays clean much longer than in my old plastic one.

Bought it for my mother for Christmas. She phones me now to tell me which birds came. Last week it was a varied thrush.

How is it made?
How is it made?
Lynda starts with a flat copper disc. She hammers it over a hollow in an old Douglas fir stump, around twenty-four hundred blows, until it curves gently from a shallow rim to a deeper middle. The rim is rolled over so small, cold feet can grip it. Then the patina goes on by hand, so no two look the same. Each bird bath is wrapped in brown paper with the date it was made.
