Lesley's Handcrafted Copper Bird Bath
Hand-raised in a tin shed in Waikari, North Canterbury
Lesley Tasker, seventy-one, thirty-four years a metalwork teacher. These are the last 96 bird baths she will ever make.
“In winter everyone puts out fat balls. In spring they hang a nest box. Come February, when the nor’wester has been blowing for a week, nobody thinks about water. That’s when the little ones are in trouble.”
— Lesley Tasker, Waikari, North Canterbury“People are generous with seed and nest boxes. Water is the thing that gets forgotten, and in a hot, dry summer it matters most. Young birds leave the nest right in the hottest weeks. A clean, shallow bowl, topped up every day and out in the open where they can watch for cats, is one of the simplest things a garden can offer.”
Dr Anna Whitfield, Ph.D. Avian Ecologist · Wild bird rehabilitation, North Canterbury- Hand-raised, not pressed out by the thousand — the bowl and the rim are worked by hand, which is why the patina falls differently on every one.
- Designed by watching, not by drawing — thirty-five summers of watching silvereyes and changing the depth and the rim until the birds actually used it.
- Metal all the way through — no plastic to go brittle in the sun, no glaze to chip.
- Sized for small birds first — a young silvereye can stand in it without going out of its depth.
- The last of the run — Lesley is closing the shed. 96 left, there is no next batch.

The Last Winter
The Last Winter
A note from the shed:
For thirty-four years Lesley Tasker taught metalwork at a college in Rangiora, North Canterbury. Every Year 10 class hammered a flat copper disc into a bowl. In 1991 one came out too flat and too wide. She filled it with water and put it on a fence post, and the next morning three silvereyes were sitting in it. Since then she has made bird baths in the tin shed behind her house in Waikari, about three thousand hammer blows each. Last winter she tore her shoulder, and the surgeon said no more hammering. These 96 are the last bird baths from her shed.

What gardeners say about Lesleys bird baths
Six years with a concrete bird bath and maybe two birds. This one had silvereyes in it the first afternoon. Now there is a queue on the rim every evening.

Gail M., Timaru
It came wrapped in brown paper with a little note on the date it was made. Out of the box and into the garden before my tea got cold.

Helen R., Dunedin
Pushed it into the garden bed in two minutes. No base, nothing to assemble. Filled it up and went inside to watch.

Kevin B., Ashburton
The blackbirds took it over first and splash half the water out every morning. I top it up with my cup of tea and they are back within minutes.

Russell P., Hastings
Bought it for Mum for Christmas. She rings me now to tell me which birds came. Last week it was a fantail having a bath.

Michelle T., Rotorua
We have two cats next door. I put it out in the middle of the lawn like Lesley says, and I watch the silvereyes from the kitchen window.

Annette K., Whangarei
First bellbird in our garden in years, and it came for the water. The copper looks lovely in the evening sun too.

How is it made?
How is it made?
Lesley starts with a flat copper disc. She hammers it over a hollow in an old tree stump, around three thousand blows, until it curves gently from a shallow rim to a deeper middle. The rim is rolled over so small feet can grip it and bees can climb out. Then the patina goes on by hand, so no two look the same. Each bird bath is wrapped in brown paper with the date it was made.
