June's Hand-Tuned Wind Chime
Hand-Tuned in Asheville, North Carolina
June Calloway, 63. Woodworker since 1993. Tunes bamboo bells on a covered porch at the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This is the last batch she will tune by hand.
“I had been making things from wood for twenty-five years. Not one of them had ever made a sound on its own. The one I forgot on the railing did. I went back to the bench that morning and started cutting the next one.”
— June Calloway, Asheville, NC

Why This Bell
Six Things You Won’t Find on a Factory-Made Chime
Every detail below comes out of thirty years of woodworking and seven years of tuning bamboo by ear. Nothing here is decorative.
One Deep Note, Not a Jangle
A single, resonant bell tone — low and warm, with a long natural decay. No clattering, no metallic ping. The kind of sound that calms a room instead of filling it.
Tuned in the 432Hz Scale
Every bell is tuned eight cycles below the modern concert standard — the tuning that Tibetan bowl makers and temple bell craftsmen have worked with for centuries. Most people notice it in their chest before they notice it in their ears.
The Bamboo Is Chosen by Ear
June selects every tube by knocking on it. Grain density, wall thickness, and natural moisture determine how it resonates. The ones that ring clean go to the bench. The rest become garden stakes.
The Flea-Market Tuning Fork
Before a bell leaves the workbench, June strikes it alongside an old 432Hz tuning fork she found at a flea market in Black Mountain in 2019. If the bell does not ring clean against the fork, it stays on the bench.
A Handwritten Note in Every Pouch
Each bell ships in a cloth pouch with a folded note inside. One sentence, written by June that morning, chosen for that bell. She does not plan them. She does not repeat them.
Four Tunings, Four Moods
D is warm and open — the morning-on-the-porch tone. Am is deeper and stiller — the one people choose for remembrance. C is clear and calm — the fastest shoulder-drop. G is bright and fresh — the garden tone.
— Expert Note
“A hand-tuned bamboo bell is genuinely rare outside the small luthier and sound-healing community. Most chimes on the market are machine-stamped, which is why they sound tinny even at low volume. What June is doing here — selecting bamboo by ear, tuning each instrument against the same reference, one at a time — is the way Koshi makers in the French Pyrenees have worked for decades. The deep, sustained bell tone is not a design choice. It is a property of the bamboo and the hand that shapes it.”

A Note From the Workshop
June hand-tunes every bell and writes a one-sentence note for each one. Slight variations in tone and in the grain of the bamboo are part of how each bell finds its voice. These are not flaws — they are the maker’s hand at work. The flea-market tuning fork settles the rest.

What customers are saying about June's drums
Hung it from the oak in the backyard. First evening on the deck, this one deep note just came out of nowhere. My husband looked at me like — what is that. It's not loud, not annoying, just one clean sound when the breeze comes through. Two neighbors already asked me about it.

Bought one for myself and ordered a second for my mom. She lives alone since dad passed. She called me after the first windy afternoon and just said — thank you. That's it. Best purchase I've made this year.

I'm not even a wind chime person. Pulled it out of the box, tapped the pendant against the bamboo once. That sound filled my entire room. I just stood there holding it like an idiot. Haven't even hung it up yet and I'm already obsessed.

How is each drum actually made?
How is each drum actually made?
Every Rain Drum is powder-coated carbon steel, then hand-tuned by Margaret herself in a sixteen-square-meter wooden shed behind her cabin at Oak Creek, three miles south of Sedona. Each drum is tuned to A=432Hz by ear — one drum at a time, no assembly line, no machine tuning. Margaret’s final check is against a small grey river stone she keeps in the front pocket of her apron. She picked it up on Oak Creek in 2021. It rings at a quarter-tone between F and F-sharp. Every drum gets that check before it ships.
Final batch: 290 drums. After these, the tuning hammer goes down.
