Maggie's Handquilted Hippie Bus Weekender
Handquilted in Sausalito, California — One Stitch at a Time
By Margaret “Maggie” Whitfield — 72, master seamstress. 38 years at the Singer. 18,000+ bags quilted by hand in a small workshop above the bay.
“I wanted every woman who packs one of these bags to take a little of that feeling with her. The feeling of leaving. Sun. Freedom. The idea that life still has a few adventures left in it for her.”
— Maggie Whitfield, Sausalito, California
What’s in the Box
Why This Bag Is Different
Stitch by stitch, by hand. Every bag takes 14+ hours of skilled handwork. No machine could replicate the texture or the soft, layered weight.
Peace signs as wheels, sunflowers along the roofline, four square windows, two round headlights. Each appliqué sewn on individually.
Holds its shape even when fully packed. Soft against your hand, structured enough to stand on its own.
Comfortable when fully loaded. The padding runs the full length so the strap never digs into your hand on a long walk.
Roomy enough for a full weekend. Compact enough to fit overhead on most U.S. domestic flights without a fight.
Sunset orange, lavender, turquoise, pink, sun-yellow. Each colorway is its own palette — tuned to the spirit of ’70s Mexico.
In two decades of reviewing handcrafted textile work, I’ve come to recognize a particular kind of bag — one that lives in a customer’s life for a decade or more. Maggie’s Hippie Bus Weekenders are one of those rare pieces. The quilting density, the appliqué detail, and the thoughtful weight balance set them in a category most mass-produced weekenders simply can’t reach. The fact that each one is being made one at a time, by a single woman who learned her craft on the road in 1972, makes every bag a small piece of textile history.

A Note About Handmade Variation
Each Hippie Bus Weekender is sewn by hand from start to finish. Color tones, appliqué placement, and stitch patterns may vary slightly from the listing photos — that’s the nature of real handwork, not a flaw. To care for your bag: spot-clean only, air dry. Avoid machine washing to preserve the colors and the handquilting.

What customers are saying about Maggie's bags
Picked one up for a road trip down the coast and ended up using it as my everyday weekender. The hand-quilting is unreal — feels like nothing else I own. The peace-sign wheels make me smile every time I grab it.

I bought this as a 50th-birthday gift to myself. The packaging alone made me tear up — handwritten note from Maggie, the numbered tag, the whole thing. After two hiking weekends and a Morocco trip, it still looks brand new.

Three women at a pool in Andalusia stopped me to ask where I got it. The construction is unbelievable — every stitch placed by hand. You can tell the second you pick it up. Worth every penny.

Patty M., Austin, TX
I went down to Sausalito to visit Maggie last week. Bolts of fabric everywhere, little felt buses, old polaroids from her Mexico trip — so much heart in every piece. Walked out with two for me and one for my daughter‚Äôs 30th birthday.

How is each bag actually made?
How is each bag actually made?
Every Hippie Bus Weekender is hand-quilted by Maggie herself in her small workshop above the Sausalito bay. Each bag takes 14+ hours of skilled handwork — cutting the cotton panels, hand-quilting the outer shell stitch by stitch, sewing on the appliquéd VW Microbus motif (peace-sign wheels, sunflowers, headlights, square windows) piece by piece, then finishing with the YKK zipper, padded handles, and lining.
No assembly line. No outsourcing. No two bags are exactly alike.
