Hilary's Hand-Stitched Owl Bag
Stitched by hand in Walsall, Britain’s old leather town
Hilary Tranter, 70, has stitched leather since 1973. Since 1996 she has made her little owl bag in a workshop by the Walsall Canal. Thumb arthritis means she can no longer stitch. These are her last 1,312.
“There’s been a tawny owl living in the old chimney across the canal since before I opened. I call him the night shift. An owl in a drawer is no use to anybody — I want to see these on shoulders.”
Hilary Tranter · Walsall, West Midlands
What comes in the box
Black, with amber eyes and metal beak
Adjustable, with buckle and clips

What makes Hilary’s owl bag special
Two needles through the same hole, from opposite sides. If one stitch breaks, the rest hold. A machine seam opens like a zip.
Base, patterned wings and brow are cut and set separately. That is why the owl has a real expression.
Every edge sanded, sealed and polished four times. British rain can’t get in, so it never frays.
Set deep into the leather instead of glued on top, so the owl seems to watch you as you turn it.
Phone, keys, purse, lipstick, bus pass. Everything you need, nothing you don’t.
Worn across the body at hip or waist. Sits flat and doesn’t swing about.
“The saddle stitch is the oldest and strongest seam in leatherwork. It is why a good Walsall saddle can last a lifetime. Very few people still use it on small bags, because it takes hours instead of minutes. Hilary is one of the last who do.”
Margaret Ingley · Retired saddlery instructor · Walsall
Perfect for
Why Hilary’s owl lasts
- Hand-stitched seams. One broken stitch never opens the bag.
- Sealed edges. No fraying, even after years of rain.
- Holds its shape. It won’t go floppy after one winter.
- Gets better with age. The corners soften where your hand rests.
- Checked one by one. Every owl is looked over in Hilary’s workshop before it leaves.
If the owl doesn’t win you over, one email to info@craft-folk.com is enough. Hilary would rather have it back than have it sit in a drawer.
Good to know: The owl is small on purpose — about the size of a hardback book. It fits a phone, keys, a slim purse and a lipstick. Every bag is finished by hand, so tiny differences in the beak or claws are normal.

The Last Stitch
The Last Stitch
A note from the workshop:
Hilary Tranter started stitching leather in Walsall in 1973, aged seventeen. Since 1996 she has made her little owl bag in a workshop above the Walsall Canal — more than 9,000 of them, every seam stitched by hand. Across the canal, a tawny owl lives in an old tannery chimney. She calls him the night shift. Now thumb arthritis means she can no longer stitch, and the workshop closes on 19 December. 1,312 owl bags from her final collection are left. When they are gone, there will be no more.

How is it made?
How is it made?
Hilary makes every owl in her workshop in Walsall. The face is built from three separate layers, the amber eyes are set into the leather by hand, and every edge is sanded, sealed and polished four times. Every seam is a two-needle saddle stitch, so if one stitch breaks the rest still hold. Small differences from bag to bag are part of the charm.
