Handmade seed paper from a Blue Ridge garden shed

Fern Tillery, 72, has made a plantable calendar by hand in Weaverville, North Carolina, every year since 1988. Arthritis in both thumbs has ended the papermaking. The 2027 edition is her last — 173 sets are left.

“I don’t want them on a shelf. I want them in the dirt. Twelve cards, twelve little patches of wildflowers by next fall — and every bee in the yard knows where to go.”

Fern Tillery · Weaverville, North Carolina

What makes Fern’s calendar different

🌱The Seed-in-the-Fiber Pressing

The seeds are mixed right into the wet paper, not glued on top. That’s the little specks you see in every card.

🔄The Month-to-Garden Cycle

When the month is over, soak the card, lay it on soil and keep it damp. By December you have twelve little plantings instead of twelve pages in the trash.

🌷The 12-Bloom Watercolor Series

A new watercolor every month: fir trees in January, lavender in April, sunflowers in July, a pumpkin in October.

🎨The Hand-Sized Easel

The card stands upright on your desk, counter or windowsill. Changing the month takes two seconds.

✋Pulled by Hand

Every sheet is pulled from the water by Fern, pressed and dried overnight. About three hours of work go into one set.

♻️From Paper to Flowers

The paper starts as recycled scraps and ends up as something the bees can use. Nothing goes to waste.

“Seed paper is one of the easiest ways to get people planting. The paper holds moisture around the seed and slowly breaks down into the soil. A calendar is clever, because it reminds you every single month. I always tell people: a sunny spot, a light covering of soil and steady moisture for the first two weeks. That’s really all it takes to get started.”

Why Fern’s calendar is worth it

  • Real seed paper. Handmade, with the seeds inside the paper itself.
  • A new picture every month. Twelve watercolors, no repeats.
  • Solid wood easel. Stands steady and is yours to keep after 2027.
  • Nothing goes in the trash. Every card can go into the garden.
  • Easy to plant. Soak, lay on soil, cover lightly, keep damp.
❤️ 30-day money-back guarantee

If the calendar isn’t right for you, one email to info@craft-folk.com is enough. Fern would rather have it back than have it sit in a drawer.

Tip from Fern: Plant your card in a pot on the windowsill in winter, or straight in the garden from spring on. Keep it damp for the first two weeks — that’s the whole secret. Every sheet is handmade, so thickness and the seed specks vary a little from card to card.

The Last Edition

A note from the shed:

Fern Tillery has made a plantable calendar by hand in her garden shed in Weaverville, North Carolina, every year since 1988. It started when she watched bags of old school paper go into the dumpster and decided to turn them into something that grows. Since then she has pulled more than 41,000 sheets of seed paper by hand. The arthritis in both of her thumbs no longer lets her lift the wet frame out of the water. The 2027 calendar is her 39th edition and her last. 173 sets are left. When they are gone, there will be no more.

How is it made?

Fern blends recycled paper scraps with water into pulp, mixes in wildflower seeds and pulls every sheet from the tub by hand with a wooden frame. The sheets are pressed, dried overnight and the corners rounded one card at a time. Her twelve watercolor flowers are printed onto the finished paper. Because every sheet is handmade, thickness and seed specks vary a little from card to card.
