Handmade in Settle, North Yorkshire

Elspeth Garside, 68. She learned to quilt as a girl at her grandmother's frame. For more than forty years she has made hand-quilted totes, one at a time, in her stone cottage in the Yorkshire Dales. This is her final collection.

"My grandmother taught me to quilt when I was a girl. I made blankets for years, until a neighbour asked if I could make her something like it she could carry every day. That was the very first tote. I've been making them ever since."

— Elspeth Garside, Settle, North Yorkshire

Why This Tote

Six Things You Won't Find on a Printed Bag

Every detail below is the result of more than forty years of making the same thing well, and refusing to cut corners on any of it.

✦ Construction

Real 3-Layer Quilted Build

A heavy cotton-poly outer shell, a full wadding interior, and a dense wave-stitch pattern that locks all three layers together. Run your thumb across it. You can feel every stitch. That is not a print. That is real quilting.

✦ Motif

Appliquéd, Not Printed

The motifs — the teapots, the teacups, and the garden blooms around them — are individually cut, layered, and stitched onto the panel by hand. They will not crack, peel, or wash off. A printed graphic is a picture of a design. An appliqué becomes part of the bag.

✦ Handles

Bartacked at Every Stress Point

Wide reinforced canvas handles, bartacked at the points where handles fail. They won't dig into your shoulder on the walk from the car park, and they won't split at the seam when the bag is packed full. Elspeth has been bartacking these handles for more than forty years.

✦ Capacity

Holds Everything, Every Day

A market-day haul, a stack of library books, a water bottle, your tablet and keys, with room to spare. The tote holds its shape instead of collapsing at the bottom. The lining wipes clean. Most customers say it becomes their everyday bag within a week or two.

✦ Care

Machine Washable

Gentle cool wash, lay flat to dry. The stitching holds because it is sewn through three layers, not glued, not printed, not heat-pressed. Elspeth has customers who have washed the same tote dozens of times. It comes back the same.

✦ Longevity

Built to Last for Years

Above her work table, Elspeth keeps a pinboard of photos her customers send in. Some have carried the same tote for fifteen years. That is not a throwaway bag. It is a piece of daily life. This one is made the same way.

✦ Craft Note

"The difference between a genuinely quilted bag and a printed one is immediately obvious when you hold both. A true quilted piece has loft. You can feel the wadding beneath the surface, and the stitching creates a raised pattern that gives the fabric real body and weight. What Elspeth is making is the real thing: a three-layer quilted construction with hand-placed appliqué, the same approach quilters have used for generations. A bag built this way will outlast most leather goods on the market."

✦ A Note From the Dales

Elspeth hand-finishes every tote and signs off on each one before it ships. Slight variations in the quilting pattern and motif placement are a natural part of handmade construction. No two totes are exactly alike, and that is by design. The appliqué is hand-placed. The wave-stitch is hand-guided. The bartacking is done one handle at a time. These are not flaws. They are the maker's hand at work. More than forty years of it.

The Final Sale

Message from the Artist:

After years of making things by hand, our workshop is closing. These are the last pieces we'll ever ship. Every item on this page was made slowly, carefully, and with more love than any factory could replicate. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced. Just real craft from real hands.

We're proud of every single one. We hope they find good homes.

When they're gone, they're gone — and so are we.

What Elspeth's customers are saying

Customer selfie in her hallway holding the Blue Teatime quilted tote

Got the Blue Teatime one and it’s even nicer in person. Proper thick quilting and the teapots are actually stitched on, not printed. It lives by the front door now and comes everywhere with me.

Customer selfie in her kitchen with the Rose Tea Set quilted tote

Treated myself to the pink Rose Tea Set after my birthday. The colours are exactly like the photos, maybe even a bit softer. It came well packed with a little handwritten card from Elspeth, which was a lovely touch. Fits the weekly shop and my purse with room to spare.

Nicola F., Worcester

Customer selfie in her front room with the Navy Blossom quilted tote

I was a bit worried about the price but once I had it in my hands I understood. It’s weighty and well made and the handles are wide enough that they don’t dig into my shoulder. My daughter has already asked for one for Christmas.

Glenys O., Llandudno

Red Tea Set quilted tote hanging on a kitchen chair

Hangs on the back of the kitchen chair so it’s always ready to grab. The red is a proper deep claret and the tea set on the front is beautifully done. Lovely bit of craftsmanship.

Packed Meadow Teapots quilted tote on a garden bench

I take mine to the library every Saturday with three or four hardbacks and a flask in it. Keeps its shape even when it’s full and stands up on its own on the bench. Took a little while to arrive but it was well worth the wait.

Blue Teatime quilted tote on a coat hook in a hallway

Been through a cool gentle wash and dried flat. No fading, nothing loose, still looks brand new on the hook in the hall. Two people at work have asked me where I got it.
