Ellie's Hand-Crocheted Beach Bags
Hand-Crocheted on Ocracoke Island
Eleanor βEllieβ Hartwell, 72 β forty-five summers on one porch. Forty-nine bags. There will be no fiftieth.
βI want them to end up on a beach. Not in a museum. The price tells you which I mean.β
β Eleanor Hartwell, Ocracoke Island, North Carolina
What arrives at your door
Why a Hartwell bag outlasts forty seasons of sand
An open mesh that lets sand fall straight through β yet holds a hardcover, a towel, a bottle and sunscreen without sagging.
Every 3D motif is crocheted free-hand, no pattern. Four to seven hours each. No two are ever identical.
Every stitch made with two olive-wood hooks from Florence, 1979 β a gift from Ellieβs late husband Frank.
No zippers, no buckles. One wet hand reaches in while the other holds a child. Straps hold 12β15 lbs.
65% cotton, 35% polyester from a closed Wilmington mill. Machine-washable. Goes softer with every summer.
A shell, sand-dollar fragment or driftwood sliver from 45 summers of beachcombing β in every single box.
βWhat stands out in the Hartwell pieces is the structural intelligence of the mesh. Open crochet of this gauge usually sags under load β hers doesnβt, because the cable columns act like ribs. You see this in maybe one in a hundred self-taught makers. Combined with free-hand appliquΓ© work of this consistency, these bags are textbook examples of American porch craft β a tradition that is quietly disappearing.β

Five motifs β five summers
Perfect for
Quality you can check yourself
- Free-hand 3D appliquΓ©s β look closely: stitch counts differ between motifs. Thatβs the proof of handwork.
- Reinforced double-strand straps β field-tested to 12β15 lbs without strap failure.
- UV-treated yarn β holds its cream color through full summers of sun and salt air.
- Machine-washable, cold β the cotton wins after eight wash cycles; the bag goes softer, never stiffer.
- Numbered batch β all 49 remaining pieces come from Ellieβs final 2022β2026 production.
30-Day Money-Back Guarantee
Take it to the beach. Watch the sand fall through the mesh. If youβre not convinced, send it back β full refund, no questions. The Mason jar token stays with you either way. Ellie was specific about that.
A note on handmade variance: Every appliquΓ© is crocheted free-hand without a pattern β petal shapes, turtle shells and wave lines vary slightly from bag to bag. This is not a defect. It is the difference between a Hartwell bag and a factory bag.

The Final 49
The Final 49
Message from the porch:
After forty-five summers on the east porch of the house her late husband Frank built on Ocracoke Island, Ellie Hartwell’s doctor was clear: the arthritis in her right hand has ended the fine appliqué work for good. Every bag was crocheted with the same two olive-wood hooks Frank brought back from Florence in 1979 — and every motif is a summer from Ellie’s own life. The turtle morning of 2004. Her daughter’s porch wedding in 1998. Frank’s last swim in 2010.
These 49 bags are the last ones her hands will ever crochet. Each ships with a parchment-wrapped keepsake from her Mason jar — a shell, a sand-dollar fragment, or a sliver of driftwood from 45 summers of beachcombing.
When they’re gone, they’re gone — and the porch goes quiet.

What Ellie’s customers are saying
Bought the daisy bag for my daughter the summer she became a mother. She unpacked it right in the dunes and found the dried beach pea wrapped in parchment. She called me crying. Real things still matter.

I’ve owned twelve beach bags in twenty years. This is the first one I still want to use after a full season of shelling on Sanibel. The mesh shakes the sand right out — I’ve never had a bag do that.

Diane Romero, Sanibel Island, FL
My kids fight over who gets to carry it. They think a little kid’s hands made the turtle — honestly, looking at it up close, they’re not wrong. It’s the only beach bag I’ve owned that gets compliments on the boardwalk.

Karen Pruitt, Surf City, NC
Three summers in, the cotton has gone softer, not stiffer. Most bags get worse with use. This one gets quieter. It hangs on my porch chair every morning next to my coffee.

Margaret Lawson, Nags Head, NC
Bought the palm tree bag for my husband’s mother. She has Alzheimer’s now and most days does not remember things. But she remembers Florida, and she remembers the bag. She asks for it every morning.

Joanne Mercer, Tampa, FL
I am thirty-four. My grandmother died before I knew her. The bag arrived with a parchment-wrapped scallop shell, and I sat with it on my kitchen floor for almost an hour. I am not a sentimental person. This bag is a different kind of thing.

Packed for the beach before I’d even left the driveway — towel, bottle, sunscreen, all in. It rode the passenger seat the whole way down the coast and looked better than anything else in the car.

How is each Hartwell bag made?
How is each Hartwell bag made?
Every bag is hand-crocheted by Ellie Hartwell on the east porch of the house her late husband Frank built on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, in 1981 — three blocks back from the Pamlico Sound. The cotton-polyester yarn comes from a small Wilmington mill that closed in 2020; Ellie bought the final stock. Every stitch is made with one of the two olive-wood crochet hooks Frank brought back from Florence in May 1979. Each 3D motif — the loggerhead turtle, the wild daisies, the palm trees, the sun and waves, the starfish and shell — is crocheted free-hand, four to seven hours per appliqué, and traces back to one specific summer of Ellie’s life. Each bag ships with a parchment-wrapped keepsake from her Mason jar of 45 summers of beach finds.
No patterns. No two alike. No fiftieth bag.
