Edith's Handmade Cat Rug
Handmade in Putney, Vermont
Edith Pelletier, 72. French-Canadian rug maker from the Connecticut River Valley. Has been making rugs by hand since she was eight years old — the way her grandmother taught her. The workshop closes at the end of July. This is her final collection.
"I never sold a rug until I was sixty-eight. They were always just for the house, for the family, for friends. Now they have to go somewhere — and I'd like them to go to people who'll actually live with them."
— Edith Pelletier, Putney, VT

Why This Rug
Six Things You Won't Find on a Factory-Made Cat Rug
Every detail below comes out of sixty-four years of making rugs the way her grandmother first taught her in the summer of 1961. Nothing here is an accident.
Real Wool Pile — Not a Print
The seven cats are built fiber by fiber from real wool. The colors, whiskers, and expressions are in the wool itself — not heat-pressed on top of a flat synthetic mat. They won't peel, crack, or wash off, because there's nothing on the surface to come off.
Seven Hand-Stitched Cats
Each of the seven cats is individually stitched into the rug ground — plum, saffron, charcoal, black, white, mint, and orange. Every whisker stands up from the surface. You can feel each cat under your bare feet on a cold morning.
Non-Slip Cotton-Poly Backing
A bonded cotton-poly underside keeps the rug planted on hardwood, tile, or laminate. No slipping. No curling at the corners after a week. No bunching at the doorway.
Half-Moon Shape — Built for Doorways
Designed for the place Edith imagines them — an entryway, a kitchen sink, the small landing in front of the fireplace. The half-moon shape fits where a rectangle wouldn't, sits flush against a door, and frames the threshold the way nothing rectangular ever can.
Machine-Washable on Cool
Built for real life with cats and boots. The cotton-poly construction goes through a cool, gentle cycle when accidents happen — and they will. Lay flat to dry. No tumble drying. Comes out looking like the day it arrived.
Final Collection — Roughly 400 Remaining
Edith closes the workshop at the end of July. The 400 finished rugs on her shelves are the last that will ever come out of the Pelletier workshop. No reorders. No second runs.
— A Letter Edith Keeps in Her Cigar Box
"Dear Mrs. Pelletier — I lost my cat Mabel of seventeen years in February. I ordered your rug because the seven little cats on it looked like every cat I'd ever loved, all together at once. It sits in front of my bed now. My new cat, Toast, sleeps on it every single night. I think she knows. Thank you for making something that holds that much."
A longtime customer — one of dozens of handwritten letters Edith has kept in a cedar cigar box since 2021.

Five Things You Get With Every Seven Cats Rug
Edith's 30-Day Return Policy
Put it by your door. Let your cat sleep on it. Carry it from the entryway to the bedside and back. If it isn't what you imagined — send it back within 30 days for a full refund. No questions, no forms. Just an email to the shop.
A Note From the Workshop
Edith makes every rug by hand, one at a time, in the back room of her home in Putney, Vermont. Because each rug is made by hand, slight variations in color, the position of the cats, and the texture of the wool are a natural part of how each one comes out. These are not flaws. This is what handmade looks like.
To keep the rug at its best: machine wash on a cool, gentle cycle when needed. Lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry. Treat it gently and it will outlast most of what you own.

Message from the Artist:
After years of making things by hand, our workshop is closing. These are the last pieces we'll ever ship. Every item on this page was made slowly, carefully, and with more love than any factory could replicate. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced. Just real craft from real hands.
We're proud of every single one. We hope they find good homes.
When they're gone, they're gone — and so are we.

What Edith's customers are saying
Okay I was not expecting to be this excited about a rug but here we are. The second I unboxed it I held it up and my husband said that's going in the living room, not by the door. We compromised. It's by the door but he keeps walking past it slowly on purpose. The cats are absolutely ridiculous and I love them unreasonably much!

My son has named every single cat. There's Kevin, Fluffy, Bob, Orange Bob, Purple Bob — he was going through a phase — Steve, and The Boss. He asks to say goodnight to them before bed. I bought this as a small thing for the entryway and somehow it became the most important object in our house.

I ordered this at 11pm on a Tuesday on a complete impulse and I have zero regrets. It arrived faster than I expected and the second I unrolled it I texted four people a photo of it. Three of them have already asked me where I got it. My cat sat on it within about forty seconds of it hitting the floor, which honestly felt like a sign.
