Dagny's Two-Stick Christmas Butter Dish
Made in a Minnesota garage studio for 46 Christmases
Dagny Carlstrom, 73, has made Christmas butter dishes in Lindstrom, Minnesota, since 1979 — four designs from her Swedish grandmother’s table. A tremor in her right hand has ended the work. These are her last 186.
“A butter dish that never sees butter is just a sad little hat. I don’t want them in a glass cabinet. I want butter in them and crumbs around them on Christmas morning.”
Dagny Carlstrom · Lindstrom, Minnesota
What comes in the box
Glazed ceramic, about 7½ in long
With a round knob to lift it off
Two sticks of butter side by side
Packed carefully, ready to give
What makes Dagny’s butter dish different
Two sticks of butter fit side by side. Enough for a full Christmas breakfast without anyone getting up to refill.
The tall dome covers the butter completely. It stays soft on the counter while crumbs and fridge smells stay out.
Reindeer, gnomes and gingerbread men are raised, not printed. You can feel them with your finger, and they don’t rub off.
Glazed inside and out. Butter can’t soak into the clay, and warm water is enough to wipe it clean.
Tomte, reindeer, gingerbread and the lucky toadstool — the four Christmas things from her grandmother’s Swedish table.
About 7½ by 4½ inches and almost 4 inches tall. The first thing most people say is: “It’s bigger than I expected.”
“Butter that sits out covered is easier to spread and kinder to soft bread — that’s why butter dishes were on every American table for a hundred years. What I like about these is the size. A covered dish that holds two sticks is exactly right for a holiday table, and a fully glazed ceramic surface is easy to keep clean. It’s a practical piece that also happens to be beautiful.”
Ingeborg Malmquist · Curator of Domestic Life · Swedish heritage museum, Minnesota

Why Dagny’s butter dish lasts
- Real ceramic. Heavy and solid, not thin plastic or melamine.
- Raised designs. Nothing to peel or fade in the wash.
- Full glaze. Smooth inside and out, no butter stains in the clay.
- Sturdy knob. Easy to grip, even with buttery fingers.
- Made to be used. Dagny’s own dish has been on her table every Lucia morning since 1979.
If it doesn’t earn its place on your table, one email to info@craft-folk.com is enough. Dagny would rather have it back than have it sit in a cupboard.
Tip from Dagny: Take the butter out of the fridge the night before and let it sit under the dome. By breakfast it spreads like a dream. Every piece is finished by hand, so the raised figures and painted lines can differ slightly from dish to dish — no two are exactly alike.

A note from the studio:
Dagny Carlstrom has made Christmas butter dishes in her garage studio in Lindstrom, Minnesota, every winter since 1979. It started when she broke her Swedish grandmother’s butter dish from 1931 and wanted to make a new one. Since then, about 3,100 dishes have gone to families at her church’s Christmas market — always in the same four designs from her grandmother’s table: tomte gnomes, reindeer, gingerbread and the lucky red toadstool. Since 2025 her right hand shakes, and the little raised figures need a steady hand. 186 dishes are left, all four designs together. When they are gone, there will be no more.

My grandmother was Norwegian and had little gnomes everywhere at Christmas. When I took the lid off this one, I had to sit down for a minute.

I bought the mushroom one for my daughter’s first Christmas in her own house. She sent me a picture of it on her counter the same day.

Good heavy ceramic, not that thin stuff. The butter stays soft on the counter all day and the lid keeps the crumbs out.

I ordered the gingerbread one and then went back for the reindeer. Two dishes on a long table look wonderful.

Gave it to my mother, who is 84. She remembered a dish just like it from her own grandmother’s kitchen.

How is it made?
How is it made?
Each dish is shaped and glazed in Dagny’s studio. The reindeer, tomte gnomes and gingerbread men are pressed on by hand as raised figures, and the mushroom design is painted by hand before the final firing. The tray holds two sticks of butter side by side, and the tall dome keeps it soft and covered. Small differences from dish to dish are part of it.
