Bill's Patriot Lantern
Handmade in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
William “Bill” Harmon, 68. Grounds supervisor at Gettysburg National Military Park for thirty-three years. Every Fourth of July since 2014, he has made his patriotic solar lanterns by hand. For America’s 250th, he is making his last.
“I walked those fields for thirty-three years. Every stone, every marker, every sunrise over Little Round Top. The Fourth means something different when you’ve spent your working life on that ground. I wanted to make a light for the porch that says what those fields say — without a word.”
— William “Bill” Harmon, 68 · Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Here’s How People Hang Theirs
Most customers order 2 or 3. One at the front door, one in the garden, one for a veteran or dad in their life.
Front Porch Hook
First thing visitors see when they pull up. At dusk the copper chain catches the light before the globe even starts to glow.
Garden Shepherd’s Stake
Push the stake into a bed or border. Visible from the kitchen window after dark. The reason people linger outside longer.
Pergola or Deck Beam
Hang it above the table or the fire pit. The red and amber light is warm enough to eat by. Two over a deck table look like a party without trying.
A Veteran. A Dad. A Grandpa.
The Gettysburg story travels with it. Bill’s handwritten card goes in every box. People say it’s the one gift that actually gets talked about.
What Happens After the Sun Goes Down
Most solar lights disappoint. Here is exactly what this one does — hour by hour.
Solar Charges Silently
The panel in the basket charges all day. You don’t press anything. You don’t plug anything in. Six hours of direct sun fills it completely.
Panels Begin to Warm
The clear panels start to glow first — warm amber. Then the red stripes deepen. It turns itself on as the light fades. No switch.
6–8 Hours Full Glow
Red stripes deep and warm. Stars field a soft cool blue. Warm amber through the clear panels. This is not a blinking LED — this is a real glow.
IP44. It Stays On.
IP44-rated solar housing. Sealed copper frame. Bill leaves his own outside all summer. Through storms. It stays on. It comes back the same.
Everything That Ships With Your Lantern
Assembled & Ready
Globe, copper frame, basket — fully assembled. Hang it from the box. No tools, no parts to attach.
Hanging Hardware Included
Copper-tone decorative link chain included. Fits any standard porch hook, pergola eye-bolt, or shepherd’s stake.
Bill’s Handwritten Card
A brief note from Bill tucked into every order. A small piece of the man and the ground it came from.
Six Things That Make It Different
No Cords. No Batteries. Ever.
Six hours of sun charges it fully. After dark it glows 6–8 hours and turns itself off. Bill has been running the same circuit on his Gettysburg porch since 2014 without replacing a single part.
Hand-Painted — Glows Like Stained Glass
Each panel is painted by hand — not printed, not stickered. The translucent resin carries the light through. At night, warm amber pours through the clear stripes. That is not a blinking LED. That is a real glow.
Copper Ribs — Structure, Not Decoration
Six vertical copper-patinated metal ribs connect the globe to the basket ring. You can feel where they socket in. The copper deepens with age — in a year it looks like it has always been on that porch.
Outdoor-Rated Through All Seasons
IP44-rated solar housing. Sealed copper-tone finish. Rain, wind, freeze-thaw. Bill leaves his own lanterns outside from April to November. They come back the same in spring. The patina deepens. The light still works.
Chain Included — Ready in 60 Seconds
Copper-tone link chain attaches to the top ring. Hook it to a porch ceiling, pergola beam, shepherd’s stake, or tree branch. No tools, no additional hardware. Bill tested two dozen configurations. This one holds in wind.
Made for America’s 250th — 640 Only
Built this winter in Gettysburg, by hand, one at a time. When they’re gone, the workshop closes. Bill is 68. This is the last collection. There is no factory. There is no reorder.
✦ The Maker
William “Bill” Harmon, 68 — Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Bill spent 33 years as Grounds Maintenance Supervisor at Gettysburg National Military Park. Every morning, he walked the same fields where 51,000 Americans fell in three days in July 1863. “You stop taking the Fourth for granted after that,” he says.
He retired in 2012. Two years later he built his first solar lantern in the old equipment shed on his property outside of town. “I wanted something that could hang on the porch on the Fourth and mean something — not a sticker, not a gas-station flag. A light.” He has made them every winter since. For America’s 250th, he made 640. When they are gone, he says, the shed closes.
Seven Things You Get With Every Lantern
640 lanterns made for America’s 250th. Bill built them this winter in Gettysburg, by hand, one at a time. When the last one ships, the workshop closes. There is no factory. There is no reorder. If you are reading this, there are still some left — but not many.
30-Day Money-Back Guarantee
If it doesn’t feel right when it arrives — the glow, the weight, the copper finish, anything — send it back within 30 days for a full refund. No questions, no forms. Just an email to our team.
Each lantern is hand-painted and hand-assembled, so expect slight differences in copper patina depth and panel color tone. No two are identical. The patina deepens naturally with age and weather — in a year it looks like it has always been on that porch. This is not inconsistency. This is what handmade looks like.

Message from the Artist:
After years of making things by hand, our workshop is closing. These are the last pieces we'll ever ship. Every item on this page was made slowly, carefully, and with more love than any factory could replicate. Nothing rushed. Nothing outsourced. Just real craft from real hands.
We're proud of every single one. We hope they find good homes.
When they're gone, they're gone — and so are we.

What Bill's customers are saying
Okay so the photos are nice but in person?? WAY better 😍 The copper has this warm glow to it that you just can't see on a screen. Took it straight to the backyard and hung it from the oak — took maybe two minutes. Had a chickadee on it before I even got back to the porch. Already told three people about it. My sister ordered hers last night because they are sold out so fast!

Real talk — I've wasted money on bird baths before. Ceramic one cracked. Plastic one turned green in a week. This one actually feels like quality. Real weight, real copper, you can feel it's not some factory junk. Took ten minutes to hang, no tools, just hook it over the branch. My wife rolled her eyes when it arrived. Two days later she's the one sitting on the porch every morning watching the birds. Already ordered a second one for seed.

I didn't buy this for the birds honestly. I bought it because the vintage umbrella shape looked cool and I wanted something different in the garden. But now? I literally sit outside with my coffee every morning just watching. Cardinals, sparrows, even a wren last Tuesday. It rained all week and the thing refilled itself — didn't have to do a thing. The copper is starting to turn green at the edges and it looks even better now than when it arrived. Best $39 I've spent this year, no question.

My little girl is 3 and she is OBSESSED. Every morning it's "daddy can we go check the birdies" before she's even had breakfast. Yesterday a robin was splashing around in there and she just stood there watching with her mouth open for like five minutes straight. Already ordered a second one to put seed in so she can watch them eat too. Honestly didn't expect a $39 bird bath to become the best thing in our backyard but here we go.
