Bernice's Hand-Stamped Baking Dish
Stamped by hand in a Wisconsin basement studio for 41 years
Bernice Sobczak, 71, has pressed every flower on these baking dishes with small sponge stamps since 1984 — the way her Polish grandmother taught her in Stevens Point. Arthritis in her thumb has ended the work. These are her last 212.
“A dish belongs in the oven, not in a china cabinet. If it never gets a little browned cheese on the edge, I painted it for nothing.”
Bernice Sobczak · Stevens Point, Wisconsin
What comes in the box
Glazed ceramic, Wildflower or Poppy
Wide enough for oven mitts
Just right for one or two
Packed carefully, ready to give
What makes Bernice’s baking dish different
About 7½ by 5 inches inside and 2 inches deep. A casserole, a side or a piece of fish for two — no empty corners that burn.
Every flower is built from several small stamps, the dots and border too. That is why no two dishes look exactly alike.
Two wide blue handles, big enough for oven mitts. Out of a hot oven and onto the table without tipping.
Goes into the oven and the microwave. Bake in it, serve in it, keep the leftovers in it. Baked-on cheese comes off after a short soak.
The center of every flower is pressed with one of 14 sponge stamps Bernice’s grandmother cut with her nail scissors.
It goes from the oven straight to the table. A plain Tuesday supper for two looks like a holiday meal.
“Most baking pans in the store are made for a family of eight. When you cook for two, the food spreads out, dries in the corners and burns at the edges. A small, deep dish keeps a two-person casserole moist and cooks it evenly. And because these go straight from the oven to the table, there is one less pan to wash. For older cooks, the big handles matter just as much as the size.”

Why Bernice’s baking dish lasts
- Real glazed ceramic. Heavy and solid, not thin metal or glass.
- Oven and microwave safe. Bake, warm up and serve in the same dish.
- Smooth glazed finish. Wipes clean, nothing to peel or flake.
- Two wide handles. Easy to grip with oven mitts and stiff fingers.
- Made to be used. Customers still bake in dishes Bernice made in 1990.
If it doesn’t earn its place on your table, one email to info@craft-folk.com is enough. Bernice would rather have it back than have it sit in a cupboard.
Good to know: This is a small dish, made for one or two people — about 7½ × 5 inches inside, holding 2–3 cups. Every flower is pressed by hand, so the pattern can differ slightly from dish to dish. No two are exactly alike.

A note from the studio:
Bernice Sobczak has made baking dishes in the basement under her house in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, since 1984. Every flower is pressed on by hand with small sponge stamps — the way her Polish grandmother Stanisława taught her when she was nine. Fourteen of those stamps were cut by her grandmother with nail scissors in 1952, and Bernice still uses them. About 9,000 dishes have gone to families at the church bazaar and Polish Fest in Milwaukee. Arthritis in her right thumb no longer lets her hold a stamp steady. 212 dishes are left from her final firing, Wildflower and Poppy together. When they are gone, there will be no more.

It really is the right size for the two of us. Mac and cheese for two, a little meatloaf, a peach crisp — and it goes straight to the table.
