Made by hand in Seagrove

Seagrove, North Carolina, has lived off its kilns for more than two hundred years. Arlis Cagle has worked in one of them since he was eighteen. When his granddaughter Shelby showed him that most tea bags and paper coffee filters contain plastic, he remembered the fired ceramic water filter in his grandfather’s kitchen, and spent two winters and more than 300 firings making one for a coffee mug.

Every filter in this last run was pressed by hand, fired in his kiln and tested with a cup of coffee before it went in the box. Arthritis has taken his hands, and the studio closes on November 30. These are the last 167 sets.

What arrives at your door

  • 2 porous ceramic filters, charcoal grey, unglazed
  • Each 3.35 inches across and 2.1 inches tall
  • Ready to use after a rinse with hot water

Why it’s different

NO. 01

The ceramic is the filter

No paper inside, no metal mesh, no plastic ring. The fired ceramic walls hold back the grounds on their own.

NO. 02

No plastic in hot water

Many tea bags and paper filters contain plastic. Here, water just off the boil touches ceramic and coffee, nothing else.

NO. 03

A clean cup

The pores are far smaller than a coffee grain. What reaches your mug is coffee, not the muddy bottom metal filters leave.

NO. 04

Nothing to buy again

No more boxes of filters, no running out on a Sunday morning, nothing in the trash after every cup.

NO. 05

Coffee and tea

Use one filter for coffee and the other for loose-leaf tea, so neither picks up the taste of the other.

NO. 06

Made for one good cup

Small enough to sit right on top of your mug. One cup, made the way you like it, with no machine on the counter.

How to use it

1

Rinse and set it on your mug. A quick rinse with hot water, then sit the filter on top of any standard mug.

2

Add coffee or tea. About two tablespoons of medium-coarse ground coffee, or one teaspoon of loose-leaf tea.

3

Pour slowly. Water just off the boil, in two or three pours. Your cup is ready in about three minutes.

4

Tap and rinse. Tap the grounds or leaves into the trash or compost and rinse the filter under the hot tap. No soap.

From someone who tests coffee for a living

“I’ve thrown out every reusable filter I’ve ever bought. I expected sludge from this one and got a clean cup. No grounds, no metal taste, no paper taste. I kept one by my own kettle.”

Good to know before you order

  • One cup at a time. It makes 8 to 12 ounces. It is not made for a full pot.
  • Use a medium-coarse grind. Very fine coffee, like espresso grind, slows the filter down.
  • It fits most standard mugs. On a very wide mug, the bottom of the filter dips a little into the cup.
  • It is fired ceramic. Treat it like a good coffee cup. A fall onto a tile floor can break it.
  • The color is natural. Every filter is the same deep charcoal grey from the firing, with a fine, stone-like surface.

Care

Rinse under the hot tap after every cup and let it air dry. Never use soap or the dishwasher, because ceramic soaks up detergent. Every couple of weeks, boil the filter for ten minutes in a pot of water with a spoonful of baking soda. That keeps the pores open and the filter fast for years. If it ever slows down, boil it again.

Excellent 4.8 / 5

  • Absolutely stunning quality!

The craftsmanship is unlike anything I've found online. Wish there was more in stock — grabbed the last one and couldn't be happier.

  • The packaging alone made me smile

Arrived faster than expected and came with a handwritten note. In a world of Amazon boxes and bubble wrap, this felt like receiving a gift from a friend. That personal touch is everything.
