Haviland, Kansas. Wendell Rausch, seventy-four, will not be going back out to the fields. In the metal shop behind his house, which he wired and insulated forty years ago, wooden crates are stacked along the wall. Inside are pieces of dark metal, heavy and angular, some the size of a fist, some barely bigger than a quarter.

These are not ordinary stones. They are pieces of meteorite — fragments of a body that formed 4.5 billion years ago, before there was a single rock on Earth, and that came down over what is now Kiowa County long before anyone put a plow into that ground. Wendell Rausch did not pick meteorites. Meteorites picked him.

His father, Otto, farmed wheat and milo on a quarter section three miles east of Haviland. Wendell rode the tractor with him from the time he was six. He learned to read dirt before he could read a newspaper.

But what stopped him was never what was in the ground. It was what had come down into it.

“My dad would hold up a handful of that black dirt and say, that’s what feeds us,” Wendell says, one hand resting on an open crate. “Then one afternoon the plow brought up a piece of metal that had no business being in a wheat field. Forty-one pounds. Heavier than anything that size ought to be. Dad didn’t know what it was. The ag teacher in Greensburg didn’t either.”

Dorothy Rausch was not a geologist. She taught fourth grade in Greensburg for thirty-one years. To understand why Wendell’s material is unusual, it helps to know what it actually is.
